Calculate Major/Minor Axis of Irregular Geometries

It is well published on how to calculate major and minor axis of an ellipse; however, I have a need to calculate the major and minor axis of irregular geometries for polygons for which all XY pairs are known along the perimeter of the polygon.

Any references would be quite helpful.
