Yes, the First Edition was written in 1986. I suggest reading the article "Numerical Recipes: Does This Paradigm Have a Future?" (@ http://www.nr.com/CiP97.pdf) if you want to know a bit more on the history of NR.

As to the difference between the First and Second Editions, take a look at the "Preface to the Second Edition".
