How to Check Your Computer's Compatibility

This page is for prospective subscribers to Numerical Recipes Electronic, the on-line edition of the Numerical Recipes book.

When you subscribe to Numerical Recipes Electronic, we want you to have a completely positive experience. Therefore, it is very important that you test your computer for compatibility before you buy a subscription. (If you are purchasing the machine-readable code, and not the electronic book, there are no compatibility issues, since the code is in plain ASCII and HTML files. You can skip this page.)

Numerical Recipes Electronic is compatible with the vast majority of Windows, Mac OSX, and Linux machines. Here's what you need to do to check your machine:

1. Install the FileOpen plug-in, following these complete instructions.

2. Verify that you can read this file. After a pause, you should see a congratulatory messsage. If you don't, then go back to step 1 and look at the "troubleshooting" section.

3. You can now try out the subscriber's portal here. In the navigation bar at the top, click on Chapter 3, then on any section you want. Green links in the navigation bar are free for you to try out. By the way, you'll get much faster display speeds after you subscribe and are able to use the red turbo button.

After you purchase a subscription, there is one more step: Go to the portal again, open the "Information for subscribers" section, enter your subscription key, and click on "Go to my control panel". From there you'll be able to activate the subscription on your machine. You can activate up to three machines on one subscription.
